Snow business for Downham Market volunteers

Volunteers from across Downham will be helping elderly people by clearing paths in snowy weather.

Volunteers will be providing a lifeline to elderly people next time snow storms batter Downham.

Many older residents were unable to leave their homes due to the snows which covered many sheltered housing areas and estate roads in previous years.

But volunteers from Downham Town Council, Downham Web and the town’s Tesco store will be stepping up to clear heavy snow from some driveways and paths when storms next arrive.

Councillor Pam Sharp said: “Last year several people were trapped in their homes and as a result we decided to get a snow team together.

“I would like to think it would make a big difference to older people. We haven’t got an army of volunteers but I am hoping more people will come forward.”

The team has been aided by 10 snow shovels and bags of salt which were donated by Tesco.

Mrs Sharpe said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Tesco.”
