More than 50 cancer survivors gathered last Wednesday to celebrate the 18th birthday of a Lynn breast cancer aftercare support group, that has helped them through each stage of recovery.
Members celebrated at their usual meeting with a party and buffet after the exercise class.
The group meets on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm at the Masonic Hall in Hamberg Way. It combines gentle exercise with a chance for members to speak about their experiences and get help and advice from other sufferers.
Jasmine Fulcher, long-term volunteer and breast cancer survivor, said: “We just help and support these women through what can be very difficult periods in their life.
“A lot of women have been there from the start and keep coming for the companionship.”
Debbie Overland, who runs the exercise sessions, said: “It’s a very happy environment with a lot of chatting. When you’re diagnosed it can be scary and the hospital gives out packs with our leaflet offering support services.
“Women are invited to join the group, but our volunteers will also call them to offer advice. The group ranges from mid-30s to 80s, some exercise is done sitting and some standing, some women just come to meet others who are going through the same thing.”
