A host of international visitors came to Swaffham to take part in the town’s annual carnival at the weekend – or so it may have seemed.

But, in fact, a number of community groups represented competing nations from football’s World Cup for the parade through the town centre to the carnival site on the Campingland.

And visitors did their best to avoid the occasional heavy downpour as they enjoyed circus skills displays and a host of other games and attractions.

Around 50 people took part in the opening parade of carnival day, which coincided with the World Cup final in Brazil.

Dennis Tallon, chairman of the Iceni Partnership which organised the event, said they had returned to a sporting theme after holding an Olympic-inspired carnival in 2012.

And he admitted they were lucky with the weather.

He said: “It was our good fortune that the first hour and a half was completely dry so the parade took place.

“If the downpour had come then we would have cancelled the parade.

Mr Tallon said that he believes the Campingland site is an ideal location for the festivities, which is run in the style of a community fete.

He said: “You’re not spread out and it generates a tremendous atmosphere.”
