Vicki Harper never forgot the kindness and help shown to her late father, David Powley, when he was a cancer patient at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. But although she wanted to show her appreciation it took time for the emotional hurt to heal.
Now, 13 years after he was a patient, Vicki has returned to the hospital to say ‘thanks’ with a cheque for £480, raised by friends and family at a fundraising evening event at Hempton Village Hall that included three fireman from nearby Fakenham acting as waiters.
Vicki, who lives in Syderstone, said: “When my dad had cancer the Palliative Care team at the hospital were really great and I never forgot their kindness – but it took me a while to feel I was in a position to start raising money.”
Her fundraiser, attended by around 70 people and organised with help from her friends Rebecca Goodison and Kirsty Cutler, proved to be so successful that she is now considering making it an annual event.
And the firemen? Vicki said: “They turned up in their uniform and acted as our waiters during the evening, for which we were very grateful. They were very popular!”
