A Thornham gardener has grown a top tomato. The fat fruit weighs in at a hefty 20 ounces and measures nearly six inches across.
Derek Batterbee, of School Row, has cultivated the Marmande tomato from seed in his greenhouse. It is a “beefsteak” variety but he said: “This is at least twice the size of the large ones you see in the supermarket.”
Mr Batterbee, 67, picked the tomato because it was weighing down its parent plant, which is now bearing another potential monster.
The plant did not receive any special treatment and he said: “I’ve just given it water and feed like I would any other.”
He will soon find out if the jumbo tomato is as tasty as it is tubby. “I expect I will slice it up for sandwiches,” he said.
