Jo Rust, Labour and NHS campaigner, said: “This is a horrendous situation that unfortunately more people are going to find themselves in as the Government puts more stringent criteria on Jobseeker’s Allowance.
“This man has been discriminated against. He is rurally isolated, educationally isolated and now he is financially isolated. He is being punished through no fault of his own.
“It is important to remember, when Henry Bellingham says he cares about this man, that he doesn’t. He voted for this to happen.”
North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham said: “I’ve heard Robert’s side of the story and I am most sympathetic. He is someone who does perhaps need some additional help with the process.
“Not everyone finds it easy to navigate the system, but there are more jobs around so it is not bleak on the employment front, but a lot of people need the motivation from Job Centre Plus. I am awaiting a response from them on this particular case.”
Linda Cox, of People Against Welfare Reforms, said: “I don’t think the Job Centre staff are interested in individual cases or in giving help where it is needed. This is a person who has obviously tried to the best of his ability to find work, but has been sanctioned. He’s got my sympathy.”
