West Norfolk tomato grower Corner Ways Nurseries, treated show visitors to a tomato experience like no other.
Cornerways is the largest single tomato green house in the UK and grows 11 different varieties. The company is situated just beside British Sugar’s factory at Wissington.
It uses by-products of hot water and CO2, from the factory to create ideal environmentally friendly conditions for the tomatoes to grow.
Commercial manager Steve Stimpson said: “More than 240 miles of piping carries waste hot water from the factory’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant around the glasshouse to maintain the balmy temperatures which suit tomato plants.
“The site also harvests the rainwater from the giant glasshouse roof; over 115 million litres are collected annually to irrigate the plants.”
He said the show gives the company an excellent opportunity to build its brand in the community.
He said: “For us, the show gives us a chance to represent our nursery and our partners at the East of England Co-op to a new audience.
“It also gives visitors to the show an opportunity to try our tasty local tomatoes for themselves”.
