Lynn soldier says 'back the boys'
A LYNN soldier serving with The Royal Anglians is encouraging West Norfolk residents to show their support when the regiment visits next year.
Private Patrick Dickerson (21), originally from North Lynn, said a warm reception and a big crowd in his home town would mean a great deal.
West Norfolk Council leader Nick Daubney and the Lynn News were among those who campaigned for the visit since the regiment's recent return from Afghanistan.
The date has now been set for Sunday, March 30, when the regiment will parade on Tuesday Market Place and then be invited with their families to a party in the Corn Exchange.
Pte Dickerson, who attended the town's King Edward VII School and the College of West Anglia, has recently returned from Kajaki, in southern Afghansitan, where he took part in patrols to protect a dam which supplies power to the Helmand province.
He said: "We visited Guildford, in Surrey, earlier this week and the reception there was brilliant. When we are out there we don't know what people are saying back here and whether we are being supported.
"But people there were lining the streets cheering for us and to have that in my home town would be brilliant and me and my family are really looking forward to it.
"I would definitely encourage people to come down and see us in Lynn.
"We would love to have a reception as good as we had in Guildford."
The regiment was granted the freedom of the borough in 1983, but has not been on parade here for ten years and has only been here twice since 1983.
On Thursday, 300 soldiers from the regiment's 1st Battalion paraded through Norwich to mark their homecoming.
