Macmillan nurse dismissed after investigation, QEH confirms

LYNN'S Queen Elizabeth Hospital has confirmed a Macmillan nurse has been dismissed after an investigation into allegations made regarding her professional conduct.

According to national newspaper The Sun, Macmillan nurse Sara Dale, who cared for terminally-ill patients, was dismissed by bosses at the Gayton Road hospital because, the paper claimed, she had had relationships with widowers after their wives, who had cancer, had died.

A statement from the hospital this morning read: "A Macmillan nurse at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Trust has been dismissed following an investigation into allegations made regarding her professional conduct.

"A hearing took place on Friday, January 29, under the Trust's Disciplinary Policy and Procedure at which one of the allegations was upheld and she was dismissed with immediate effect.

"The matter will now be referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Conduct Committee.

"As a result of the hearing this individual is no longer a Macmillan nurse or entitled to hold the Macmillan name in her job title."

Regional Director, Macmillan Cancer Support, Stephen Richards said: "Sara Dale was employed by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Trust as a palliative care nurse from 1998. This is a post that was created and funded by Macmillan for two years.

"There are over 4,500 Macmillan health professionals in the UK who last year alone gave much-needed support and care to nearly half a million cancer patients and their families.

"We expect our health professionals to adopt the highest standards of care and adhere to the strictest codes of professionalism."
