Church and council officials are set to join forces to help fund the final phase of renovations to Swaffham’s parish church.

Members of the town council agreed to provide up to £5,000 of funding to finance the replacement of the gates in Church Walk, leading to the St Peter and St Paul Church, during a meeting on Wednesday evening.

It is also understood that the church itself will provide funds with additional backing coming from a private benefactor.

Officials say they have been keen to replace the Church Walk gates for some years in order to install structures as close to the originals as possible.

Denis Bishop, a member of the church’s parochial church council (PCC), said: “With all the work on the church, the surrounding area and walkways that has taken place in recent years, the gates were the last item that needed to be completed to enhance the whole area.

“We are working with the town council to find away to complete this work.”

Recent work on the site has included essential repairs to the church’s heating system, as well as the installation of eight new windows and the development of a car park for visitors and staff.
