A North Lynn exercise therapist is holding a special fundraising event in order to hit her £5,000 target for next year’s London Marathon.
Charlie Harwood, 32, was providing a child in Swaffham with therapy for his condition, which had left him without the ability to speak, when she was inspired to help raise funds for MENCAP.
She said: “This young lad never had anything but a smile for me, even when he was in great pain. He inspires me just to be a better person. I really wanted to do something to show my support.”
Charlie decided to apply for the London Marathon and pledged to raise £5,000. She has already started the fundraising by raffling hampers and holding monthly charity spin classes at Parkwood Leisure Centre in Swaffham, but still needs to boost her charity fund.
She said: “Then I had an idea for a big event, I decided to hold a four-course dinner and race night, and despite being told it was too much work for one person, I am holding it on November 15 at Holme Hale Village Hall. We have sold 92 tickets and have 30 left.”
She also has a Christmas Market at the leisure centre on December 12, with 32 indoor stalls, a pop-up Christmas cafe and a Father Christmas workshop.
Charlie said: “On January 31, at Hilgay Village Hall, a burger-eating competition will be held, entry forms can be collected from AJ Dent Butchers Hilgay.
“I am also selling advertising spaces on my training vest and T-shirts.”
With all this fundraising, Charlie still finds plenty of time to train, running four days a week across West Norfolk and logging every training session on her blog.
She said: “This is where people can see what I’m up to and laugh at me hardly being able to walk or silly things I’ve done to train like climb Snowdon, drive across and climb Scafell Pike just so that I can hold a sign with my fundraising page on.”
