At a special awards ceremony on Tuesday, architectural excellence and craftsmanship was celebrated at the Mayor’s Design Awards.

Thirty schemes were shortlisted for the awards under a number of different categories. The judging panel had previously commented that the standard and diversity of entries was impressive.

This year an additional category of Craftsmanship was included to recognise some of the fantastic work of the craftsmen in West Norfolk. Excellent brickwork, stonework and carpentry were all celebrated.

The Gold Award winner was Pentney Abbey Gatehouse. The restoration of this Scheduled Ancient Monument has been a master class in historic building craftsmanship and has seen it rise from a derelict ruin on Historic England’s List of Buildings At Risk, back to a ‘high status’ rating. It is a stunning piece of Medieval architecture which will now be safe for future generations to enjoy.

With the mayor, Barry Ayres, still recovering from an operation it was deputy mayor Colin Manning who hosted the ceremony.

He said: “The quality of this year’s entries for the Mayor’s Design Awards 2014 made it an exceptionally difficult job for the judges to make their final decisions. Every one of this year’s entrants has contributed to making West Norfolk an even more beautiful place to live, with their vision, designs and craftsmanship.”
