Plans for a major expansion of services at Gaywood’s Post Office were announced yesterday.

Officials have revealed that, from early June, customers will be able to access postal services until 9pm seven days a week at the Wootton Road branch.

Area manager Kevin Shepherd said: “We understand how important Post Office services are to the people of Gaywood and we are confident this new, modern service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

Under the plans, the branch will be closed at 5.30pm on Thursday, May 22, for refurbishment work to take place.

It is then expected to re-open at 1pm on Monday June 2.

Customers are being advised to use post offices on the Fairstead estate on in Nursery Lane, South Wootton, where residents are fighting plans to move their post office service to another site in Gaywood, as alternatives during the closure period.

The new-look facility will offer three new service points, including one which will enable customers to access postal services at any time between 6am and 9pm on Mondays to Saturdays and between 7am and 9pm on Sundays.

Officials say the proposal will offer 57 additional hours of opening each week.

More than 8,000 branches nationally are being refurbished during the current programme of work, which is costing more than £1.3 billion.

A further £640 million has also been committed to extend the programme until 2018.
