Downham could be getting state-of-the-art sports facilities if plans to renovate a community centre come together.
An all-weather football pitch is among the improvements proposed to the out-of-date Jubilee Community Centre.
The plans for the Howdale Road site were outlined by town councillor David Sharman during last Thursday’s annual town meeting at the town hall.
He said: said: “We have come up with proposals to change the football pitch to a 3G multi-purpose and re-decorating around the pitch.
“It is going to cost a great deal of money but we are looking for grants.”
Mr Sharman, who chairs the town council’s town hall committee and is vice-chairman of its property committee, also told the meeting that there were plans to modernise the toilets at the town hall itself.
He also announced further measures which officials hope will encourage the public to use the building more often.
Mr Sharman said: “We are applying for a licence to hold wedding ceremonies in the town hall so we can offer a complete service and reception here.”
Concerns were also raised during the meeting about speeding along Bexwell Road.
