If you wanted to declare your love to that special someone today, would you say it with flowers, chocolates or, just maybe, a shed?

Well Gemma-Louise Bramham is now set for a Valentine’s Day to remember after she won a competition organised by Lynn’s Vancouver Quarter to find the area’s most unromantic person.

Gemma-Louise, 24, of Ringstead, has been with her boyfriend Matt Nelson, 26, for the past eight years.

But during that time, she has endured some less than romantic gestures, including him inviting friends on their dates and even buying her a shed instead of jewellery last Christmas.

She said: “I’m a gardener and I wanted a shed to put my tools in, so I was going to buy one myself and I’d asked Matt for jewellery.

“He said, ‘I bought you a shed because it’s practical and something that you need’.”

On another occasion, he presented her with a ring box containing money for new tyres, instead of a sparkling jewel.

But Matt described that as “a bit of a joke” and said he had bought her a bracelet at the same time.

He said: “I think there’s a lot worse people out there than me.”

But Gemma-Louise said it was his own mum, Carole, who had persuaded her to nominate him.

She said: “We went shopping on Saturday and she said, ‘Come on, we’ll name and shame him’.”

The couple were announced as the winners on Wednesday and Matt said: “I’m keeping a bit of a low profile. It’s not the best thing to be nominated for.”

But, thanks to his record, the couple will now be enjoying their Valentine’s night at the Duke’s Head Hotel in the Tuesday Market Place.

Around 50 people entered the contest to win a three-course meal and overnight stay at the hotel, plus champagne, perfume and aftershave. Centre manager Abbie Panks said: “What was interesting is they were all women.

“We wanted to do something a bit different. Everyone does the competitions about why their partner is so great and we wanted to reward someone who hasn’t had a very romantic time.”

And Gemma-Louise said: “It’ll be the first one for many years.”

Asked if he was looking forward to their special night, Matt said: “Kind of. It’ll be interesting.”
