Rudham’s playing field committee have a large fundraising hill to climb. They need £250,000 to replace their old pavilion.

Part of that fundraising drive was their third fete on the playing field on Saturday.

“The most we’ve made from this event so far is £1,800,” said organiser, Bridget Annand. “To date we have about £12,000”.

The six-strong playing field committee worked hard to provide a wide range of stalls and entertainment including sheep and dog shows and a lawn bowls competition.

One disappointment was a weather-related cancellation of a hot air balloon but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the many people who thronged to the event.

One new drive to raise money was a raffle. “We went round the village before today and sold £1,500 worth of tickets,” said Ms Annand. “We’re grateful to everyone who helped and supported us.”

Later, the committee intend to apply for a lottery grant.
