Years of hard work from dedicated villagers was realised at the weekend when Welney celebrated the opening of its new community centre and sports pavillion.
Residents gathered at the playing field on Saturday, when the new £220,000 building was officially named the William Marshall Centre in honour of the village’s greatest benefactor William Marshall.
The day was a special milestone for Welney folk, who spent years working on providing a new centre to replace the dilapidated old village hall.
Funding was provided by Marshall’s Charity, which was set up by Mr Marshall to benefit Welney more than 330 years ago, as well as WREN (the waste recycling charity) and Sport England.
The centre was officially opened by John Gilbert, chairman of Marshall’s Charity.
Villagers also enjoyed entertainment, a bouncy castle, barbecue, refreshments, and a live band and disco.
