A Girl Guide is appealing for support to help raise funds for an educational trip overseas.

Gemma Overson, 16, a student at Lynn’s King Edward VII School, is one of just eight Lincolnshire guides chosen to take part in a trip to Minsk, in Belarus, designed to strengthen relationships with units there and give members an insight into other cultures and lifestyles.

In order to make her July trip a reality, Gemma, of Wingland, Sutton Bridge, needs to raise £1,000 to cover the costs. “It really is an extraordinary chance,” said Gemma who is a young leader with Long Sutton Guides.

“During the trip we will be sightseeing in the city, while staying with a Russian family for four days, and although unfamiliar for most of us, it will be enjoyable to learn first-hand about another lifestyle and culture.

“On the remaining week we’ll be camping with the Minsk guides, taking part in activities such as outdoor pursuits, music, singing and crafts – we’ll be learning some new things which we’ll bring back to teach other brownies and guides when we return home.”

Links with Minsk were formed back in 1992 when a small group from Belarus attended Poacher, Lincolnshire’s International Guide and Scout Camp, while searching for their own youth association.

It has since been tradition for guides from the city and Lincolnshire to make regular visits to each other’s units.

“Girl guiding has been a dominant part of my life since childhood,” said Gemma who joined when she was around eight years old.

“It’s given me many skills, qualifications and friendships – all of which remain great memories and I know there are many more to be achieved. This trip is a fantastic opportunity.”

In order to meet her target Gemma is organising a series of fundraisers including a race night, bake sale and an Easter fete at the Long Sutton Scout and Guide Hut, on Easter Saturday, from 10.30am.
