Church leaders in Swaffham are appealing for sponsors to support their plan to sing 748 different hymns to help raise funds for repairs.

Officials at the town’s Methodist Church are running the Pinnacle Appeal to find the estimated £160,000 needed to pay for a new roof at the London Street venue.

Now, worshippers are planning to hold a daily service during the period of Lent next February and March in order to complete their Hymnathon challenge.

And they are calling for people to sponsor the songs, which are all taken from the church’s Singing the Faith hymn book, to help them meet their £3,000 target for the project.

Officials plan to open the church between 10 and 11am each morning from Ash Wednesday, February 10, to Palm Sunday, March 20, to complete the challenge.

That means worshippers will sing up to 19 hymns per day.

The church has set up a fundraising page at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/swaffhamhymnathon/251592.

More information can also be found at the church’s website, www.swaffhammethodistchurch.org, where supporters can download a form to choose the hymns they wish to sponsor.

Visitors to the church are also being encouraged to get involved, particularly during the regular fundraising coffee mornings held there.
