Swaffham art exhibition success

SWAFFHAM Rotary Club has been celebrating an "excellent" 17th annual art exhibition and sale of art that has raised about £3,500 for its local, national and international charities.

More than 80 artists, professionals and amateurs, from all over East Anglia provided 400-plus exhibits, including paintings, sculpture and photography, for the event in the town's Assembly Rooms.

Among them was important new entrant Maz Jackson, whose paintings have been shown in galleries and museums across the UK, Europe, USA and Japan. She lives and paints in Norfolk and has been invited to represent the UK at the Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art in December.

Delighted club secretary Denis Bishop said: "It was an excellent event and we had some very good comments about how professional our exhibition is becoming and that the quality and standard is going up all the time. It's becoming a regional art exhibition now and gaining quite a status.

"We sold well over 6,000 worth of art and with the entrance fees, raffle and refreshments we slightly exceeded the amount raised last year for our charities. Some of the views of Swaffham and the surrounding area sold extremely well."

Mr Bishop said about 100 people attended the ticket-only preview evening last Friday and there were about 250 visitors to the exhibition in total.

The event had a new sponsor, Barclays Bank, this year and for the first time a quality catalogue, sponsored by Premier Foods and many local businesses, giving details of all the displays.

Past president Nigel Chambers and his wife, Sheila, led the team of Rotarians in preparing for the show, manning it over the weekend and clearing everything away afterwards. "They worked particularly hard to ensure it was a success," Mr Bishop said.
