The dreams of 16 of West Norfolk’s most talented young dancers came true when they were chosen from 200 hopefuls to appear in an electrifying adaptation of Swan Lake with the English Youth Ballet.

This incredible opportunity will see the young dancers taking to the stage at Norwich’s Theatre Royal next month alongside the company’s principal artists in this professional production.

Joining them for intense rehearsals and three performances, the youngsters will gain experience of life as a professional ballet dancer.

British principal ballerina, Julianne Rice Oxley, said: “The young dancers we are working with in Norfolk have great energy and attack. Working in a professional environment gives the students a unique insight into life in a ballet company.

“They are so lucky – I wish there had been something like EYB when I was training. I feel very privileged to be a principal with EYB as I get to work with some of the UK’s most talented young dancers. I find them incredibly inspiring!”

The young cast are working with the EYB’s principal dancers at Sprowston Community High School in a 10-day intensive rehearsal process.

Charlotte Pickles, 16, from South Wootton, is a student at King Edward VII School and trains at Footlights Performing Arts.

She said: “I can’t remember when I started dancing – I think its just something I have done all my life. I love all styles of dance – not just ballet.

“Ballet is just so beautiful to watch and its one of those things that you just wish you could do it yourself. Its amazing to do – just so wonderful.”

She added: “I danced with English Youth Ballet two years ago in Giselle. I am cast as a Swan in the production of Swan Lake – its such an incredible ballet. Above all others it’s the ballet I’ve always wanted to do.”

This brand new production focuses on the rivalry between the seductive evil Black Swan Odile and the beautiful, but vulnerable White Swan Odette, as they compete for the affections of the Prince.
