Without doubt it’s all happening on the music scene at the moment so I make no apologies for devoting the first part of the column this week to grand musical events in the area.
As regular readers will already know, the King’s Lynn Sinfonia makes it debut at The Minster, King’s Lynn, tomorrow evening at 7.30pm and the programme will consist of organ concerti by Vivaldi, Handel and Poulenc and Albinoni’s famous Adagio for Organ and strings. The Organ soloist is Adrian Richards and the proceedings will be directed by distinguished conductor and composer ,Michael Hankinson. Tickets are £5 on the door, children under 16 go free! It’s going to be an exciting night and with the support of local people, in all ways, we look forward to more musical delights from these musicians in the future!
Another Orchestra to be proud of is the well loved Norfolk Symphony Orchestra . This autumn they have been busy with very worthwhile outreach work, but their next concert (the first of their new season) will consist of music by Dvorak, Elgar and Stravinsky and if I tell you the concert has the title : A Hand of Poker in the New World you may be able to guess some of the works! This concert takes place in mid- November, so you have time to explore the Orchestra’s website for more details.
If you enjoy organ music why not go along and enjoy a concert with the promise of a varied programme at St John’s Church, on the Walks, 7.30pm on the evening of Wednesday, October 21? Mike Hall will be the organist and the concert is organised by King’s Lynn Organ Club. Tickets are a modest £6.50 or a fiver for club members. Contact 01553 671285.
I must mention a recital bound to be very special – chamber music coming up at Holkham Hall, starting at 7pm on Friday, October, 23. The event features distinguished musicians Elizabeth Watts and Julius Drake. Call 01328 713111 now.
Still at Holkham I see Halloween is being marked with entertainment being held between October 25 and October 31, 10am-5pm. There will be plenty of spooky spots and trick or treats for all the family to enjoy, and the chance to dress up to suit the occasion! Tickets can be ordered on-line or obtained from the office, again 01328 713111 is the number.
For those interested in art a new art group has been started at St Faith’s Church, Gaywood. It meets fortnightly at 2pm and the next meeting will be on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 14. All interested are welcome, of whatever ability, but please bring your own paper and art materials. Richard Parr, the church warden, is the man to contact.
Another item for artists, but for those aged between 5 and 11 years! Why not go along to Downham Library and draw a Super Hero! Why not? Booking is essential for this event, taking place at 2pm on Monday, October 26. Contact 01366 383073.
Lastly, if you feel like stretching those little grey cells, there is a Quiz Night on Friday, October 23 , at South Wootton Village Hall, 7.30pm. Teams up to six, with a £5 entry fee. Call 07952 369847.
