Heat four of this year’s Twisted Melon Battle of the Bands was staged at Kudos/Dr Thirsty’s in Lynn and on paper, the loudest of the heats so far.
That said, the four bands on the bill were all very different, writes Jon Seymour.
Opening the proceedings were Disabled Angel, an electronic rock trio. All of the material was original and their songs are very strong. They got off to a shaky start, but once they got into their stride they really opened up and got the crowd on their side. They’ve an album due out later this year.
Next to take the floor were covers band Dead Horse. To say they put on a show would be an understatement. Front man “Big Al” wasn’t content to stay in the designated area, instead using a wireless mic and performing IN the crowd. The rest of the band were really tight and they all put everything into it.
The Thinking Men have built up something of a reputation for being rather good, so they had to live up to the hype. They did of course, and then some. You have to witness this band for yourself to see how good they actually are. They have a cool image and a very unique sound, and again put on a show that was as visually captivating as it was musically.
Closing the show were pop/punk foursome O.V.N. and once again it was a high energy show. They brought a crowd of fans with them too, and the atmosphere in the place went up a notch when they were interacting with each other. The whole performance was flawless and their banter between songs was funny and engaging.
After the judging, The Thinking Men walked away with the semi-final slot, but with such quality on display tonight it could have gone any which way.
