BREAKING NEWS: King Street traders support call for road to be closed to traffic

TRADERS close to the site of a collision in which a three-year-old boy died have joined calls for the road to be closed when The Mart is running.

Store owners in King Street also feel that it would be safer if the road was sealed off when the fairground is open.

Thousands of people have signed an online petition to call for King Street to be closed during the fair.

Manager of the Prezzo restaurant Arnas Rakstelis said that a member of his staff took out a chair and a glass of water to help the distressed mother.

Mr Rakstelis said: “They should close the road when the fair is on.

“It is really dangerous with a lot of people here.”

One woman, who did not wish to be named but works close to the site, saw the ambulance and police car shortly after the crash.

She said: “It would be a bit safer if the road was closed when The Mart is open.”

Phillip Seaman, who owns The Insurance Office, agrees that King Street should be sealed off to traffic in the evenings when the fair is open to protect excited youngsters.

He said: “When The Mart is open, I think the road should be closed to traffic.

“Yesterday it was heaving with youngsters. They come walking down here with their parents and are so excited.

“I feel really strongly about that.”
