BREAKING NEWS - Lynn Ferry to lose £25,000 of county council funding
LYNN’S pedestrian service will have its public funding cut after county council chiefs today backed plans to axe its £25,000 contribution to the service.
Officials admit the cuts may trigger a reduction in the boat’s crossings, but say they hope it will continue to operate.
Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council’s cabinet member for transport, said today: “To keep subsidising the ferry could only be at the expense of rural buses serving communities where people rely upon public transport to get to work, education and the shops.
“It is very hard to justify spending £25,000 a year on the ferry when we also support a bus service that provides a fully accessible alternative journey into King’s Lynn.
“We hope the ferry will be able to continue on a more commercial basis because we know it performs a useful service, not least as a park and ride, which reduces the number of car journeys into King’s Lynn.
“This may mean reduced crossings and higher fares, but it could still be an attractive choice given that there is no charge for parking at West Lynn.”
The cuts, which will come into force in April if they are confirmed in the authority’s final budget, are part of £500,000 worth of cuts to the county’s transport budgets.
Among the casualties will be reduced bus services in Lynn after 9pm, and cuts to Coasthopper services from Hunstation to Wells, Sheringham and Cromer between October and March.
Winter Sunday services linking Lynn and Fakenham to Holt will also be scrapped.

Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:41 AMTotally agree with grissles. How much money would council parking generate and WHY do they get free parking? Where is this Council's green policy anyway? If certain councillors spent more time working rather than walking round town and being seen in coffee shops perhaps they could justify their wages. And do we really need ALL these councilors and their exaggerated wages and expenses. Get rid of the surplus! Give the money back to the council tax payers and give us the service we pay for!!

Friday, January 6, 2012 at 03:55 PMAmazing that this announcement comes a day after the Tory reptiles at NCC seem to have found £8m of extra funding just lying around. These people are picking on the people of Lynn because we won't roll over and let them stick their toxic monolith of an incinerator here without a damn good fight. Despicable.
