BREAKING NEWS - Mart organisers announce five minutes’ silence to take place tonight
ORGANISERS of the Lynn Mart have announced they will hold five minutes’ silence this evening in memory of a three-year-old boy who died after a car accident last night.
The Mart’s chief steward, Don Gray, said this morning that his condolences were with the family of the youngster who was killed in King Street, Lynn, at 5.30pm yesterday.
He confirmed the silence, in which all the fair’s machines will be switched off and no music will be played, will take place when the site opens at 6pm this evening.
But he has rejected suggestions the fair should have closed after the incident, insisting the accident had not happened there.
There have also been claims the boy had been having a meal with his family at a nearby restaurant prior to the accident.
An emotional Mr Gray said that his family had been through a similar tragedy when his wife’s four-year-old nephew drowned last summer in Stanground, Peterborough,
He said: “Our sympathies are with the family. I do not even know if they had been to The Mart or if they were on their way.
“We know how this family must be feeling. We are going to hold a mark of respect for this tragedy with what happened to my family last summer.”
Mr Gray also confirmed there are no plans to close The Mart, which will remain in town until February 28.
He said he was told by police at 7pm that an accident had happened in King Street, but did not learn of the youngster’s death until later.
He also stated that the fairground helped the police by using its barriers to create a funnel to Ferry Street.
Mr Gray said: “If we had known at the time, possibly. But we did not know that the child had died. If we had known and been requested by the police to close The Mart, yes The Mart would have closed. But it wasn’t anything to do with The Mart. It was not even in the area of the Mart.”
