A woman has been jailed for 10 weeks today, the day after being arrested by police who found her hiding in a wheelie bin.

Rebecca Wilson, 19, of Gaywood Road, Lynn, was sentenced when she appeared before magistrates in Norwich via videolink earlier, after admitting a charge of theft.

She was sentenced to two weeks in prison after pleading guilty to stealing jars of coffee, worth £24, from Sainsbury’s in Lynn yesterday.

That term will run consecutively to a further eight weeks in jail imposed for committing a further offence during the operational period of an existing suspended sentence.

Earlier, police said they had been alerted at around 11.50am yesterday after a woman suspected of committing a shoplifting offence was seen on CCTV near the Lynn bus station, before running off towards Albion Street.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said Wilson had climbed over a number of rooves in a bid to escape before being found in a commercial waste wheelie bin She was discovered shortly after noon.

The King’s Lynn Police Twitter feed earlier said the woman had been detained after “a short foot chase” and was discovered in a wheelie bin.

As well as the prison terms, Wilson was also ordered to pay a £180 criminal courts charge and an £80 victim surcharge.
