Police have been checking caravans and trailers being towed through Fakenham during a special operation.

Assisted by the HM Revenue and Customs, vehicles were stopped on Tuesday, April 8. It follows a rise in thefts of caravans nationally, and concerns about trailers towed without the correct driver’s licence.

Thirty-six vehicles were stopped just off the A148 near the football club on Tuesday 8 April 2014 and two vehicles were seized. One had no insurance and one driver did not have the correct licence. A trailer which was believed stolen was also seized.

Seven fixed penalty notices were issued and five drivers received verbal warnings. One vehicle was found to be using red diesel by HMRC who also took details of a number of drivers around employment issues.

Temporary Sergeant Tony Perretta said: “By stopping and speaking to drivers, taking action where necessary, we have helped make Fakenham’s roads safer and take away criminals’ use of the roads. Police will be continuing to look out for suspicious vehicles towing caravans and trailers, and I would urge owners to keep them secure when not in use.”
