One of the most popular events on West Norfolk’s summer calendar, the World Snail Racing Championship, has taken place today.
The event is one of the main attractions of the annual Congham Fete, which was held at the Grimston cricket ground this afternoon, in aid of St Andrew’s Church.
And the title crossed the border from Norfolk to Cambridgeshire as Herbie II, complete with red, white and blue paint reminiscent of the legendary Volkswagen Beetle of the films, proved too slippery for its rivals.
The winner was brought to the table by Colin Voss and his family, who travelled from Histon, near Cambridge, to enjoy the day.
They brought five snails to the event, having found them in their garden this morning.
Around 200 snails took part in 13 heats before the final, which is captured in our video. Visitors from as far afield as Italy enjoyed the spectacle.
