A brave breast cancer patient is set to take on a fundraising trek – just days after her final chemotherapy treatment.
Donna Denyer will embark on a 26-mile hike in Scotland with her 70-year-old breast cancer survivor mum Jean Terry next month, before getting ready to undergo an expected double mastectomy.
The 52-year-old’s challenge has already raised £900 for the Breast Cancer Now charity, and she is also raising awareness of the condition with the help of her two white Pyrenean mountain dogs, Charlie, 8, and Miya, 3, by temporarily dying their fur pink.
Donna, of Hurn Drove, Welney, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in February after spotting what appeared to be a bruise on her right breast whilst changing at the swimming pool.
She finishes the last of six chemotherapy sessions on June 7 and sets off on the famous West Highland Way trek on June 25.
The mum-of-four said: “My consultant said I could do the walk and have my operation about four to six weeks later.”
What surgery Donna faces has yet to be decided, but due to the form of cancer it’s likely she will have a double mastectomy, rather than a partial or single one.
Donna said she was looking forward to the walk, but expects it to be difficult as the chemotherapy has made her skin thin and sensitive, causing blood blisters on her feet.
“I can’t wait to do it,” she said. “My mum’s excited too, it will be lovely to do it together. How she coped with her breast cancer has been a real inspiration to me.”
Donna is approaching the challenge with the same positivity she has shown her illness from day one.
She said: “Being told I had cancer was a big shock, but I’ve not got really upset. There’s not a lot I can do, apart from take each day as it comes.”
Donna said she has also been inspired by her work colleagues at Center Parcs at Elveden Forest, who have raised more than £1,300 since her diagnosis for Cancer Research UK with events like obstacle mud runs.
