It was success all round for young athletes from West Norfolk Athletics Club, representing the county at the Regional Sportshall Finals in Hatfield last Sunday, writes Louise Rice and Sharon Smalls.

In the U11 girls’ team, Amber Scott ran strong legs in both the obstacle and hurdle relays which were valuable wins for the Norfolk team. She was placed third in the high stepper and performed well in the triple jump. Overall victory was announced for Norfolk in this age category.

The U13 boys, who finished a close overall second, were represented by captain Mason Higby, Nathan Smalls and Charlie Williams.

Williams had three strong events, seeing him win a 6-lap heat, then secure an overall first place in this event. Despite an injury in his triple jump warm up he still jumped a valiant 7.14m, giving him third place overall. Williams then teamed up with Mason Higby to power through to second place in the 8-lap parlaf relay.

Higby also competed in the 4-lap race and qualified for a place in the final, finishing in a very respectable 5th place. His crowning glory was a new personal best in his shot put, with a throw of 10.42m which gave him second place overall.

Smalls competed in the 2-lap heats and qualified with a very impressive second fastest time and came second overall in this event.

Smalls then gained a triumphant standing long jump win. This was followed by running first leg in the 2-lap relay, achieving second place.

For the U13 girls, captain Lucy Koenigsberger set the standard by winning the shot put with yet another pb of 10.56m. She also ran the anchor leg in the obstacle relay to secure first and then the 1-lap relay, a close second.

Abi Rice performed well in the vertical jump (49 cms) and ran fast legs in both the 1-lap relay and the winning 2-lap relay.

Although being placed second overall, the U13 girls’ team received the exciting news that they have qualified for the national finals, due to being the best field events team in the country.

The National Finals will take place at Manchester Sportcity Regional Arena on Saturday, April 25.
