A special meeting will take place this week to consider plans for a controversial gasifier plant near Sutton Bridge.

The West Norfolk Council planning committee will examine the scheme at a meeting in Lynn this Thursday, July 17.

Although the borough council will not have the final say on whether the proposal put forward by Energy Park Sutton Bridge goes ahead or not, it has been asked for its views as a consultative authority.

And officials have recommended the authority raises no objections, as they do not believe it would have a significant impact on air quality in the borough.

Their report to the committee also showed the developers had dismissed suggestions that some or all of the 420,000 tonnes of wood which would power the site would be imported through Lynn’s port, before being taken to the site by road.

The document quotes the company as saying: “We will source our fuel from as close to the site as possible.”

Meanwhile, villagers who are planning a mass car “procession” on the A17 in protest agains the scheme later this month are also being urged to take their fight to the headquarters of South Holland District Council, the authority which will initially determine the fate of the planning application.

Speaking at an extraordinary parish council meeting in the village on Friday, councillor Phil Scarlett said: “You can make all the noise you like in Sutton Bridge, but I believe in Spalding the councillors there are saying ‘it’s happening out there, it’s nowhere near us, so we don’t care’.

“If you want to have a protest, have it in Spalding – have it outside South Holland District Council. It’s in the system now, play the system and make it work.”

Roger Ward, from the King’s Lynn Advisory Group – a watchdog that examines issues to do with The Wash – said South Holland District Council has a statutory duty to protect The Wash and must do that.

He also called for an independent expert opinion on the environmental assessment for the scheme.
