West Norfolk actors enjoy big time
WEST Norfolk youngsters have their work cut out for them when the county's premier youth drama group perform a trio of musicals in just a week.
Norfolk Youth Music Theatre took audiences on a whirlwind of shows at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich from Sunday until Saturday.
First up was a double performance on Sunday and yesterday of The Little Sweep, starring 13-year-old Sam Miller from Lynn as the woeful Little Sweep, and The Enchanted Lovers, which was nominated for best opera and best music at The Edinburgh Fringe festival in August.
At the end of the week, from Thursday to Saturday, the group will be performing the classic tale Into the Woods, starring the youngest cast member Augusta Urquart (11), from Lynn, as Little Red Riding Hood.
The group's musical director Adrian Connell said: "It is an ambitious task taking on three musicals back to back in a single week, but we have the talent in the company to do it."
The Little Sweep, written by Benjamin Britten, is a morality tale in which Sam the sweep boy is sold into service and bullied by his elders.
It also stars 12-year-old Fraser Davidson from Downham as Hughie Crome.
The Enchanted Lovers is an adaptation by Howard Goodall of the love story of Dido and Prince Aeneas, played by Ben Weston, of Stody, near Fakenham.
Ben also appears as the narrator in Into the Woods, a musical feast by Stephen Sondheim which draws together a whole host of traditional fairytale characters and looks beyond their "happily ever after" endings.
It features Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, the Baker's Wife, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel and allows their paths to cross as they venture into the woods.
Tickets for The Little Sweep and The Enchanted Lovers cost 6 (5 concessions) and 10 (8 concessions) for Into the Woods. They are available by contacting the Maddermarket Theatre box office on 01603 620917.
