HMS RICHMOND rescue 134 migrants as part of a combined effort with the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean, on Operation SOPHIA, the EU operation to tackle the migrant crisis.

This is the third such even HMS RICHMOND has taken part in since joining Op SOPHIA in late October. The operation is now focused on the migrant smugglers, disrupting their operation in order to save lives.

Have your say

The arrogance of the left is only surpassed by their sophistry. This is well illustrated in the latest letter from Mr Larcey when in an attempt to label his opponents like me ignorant, he actually gets the historical facts wrong himself.

In a diatribe so familiar it has become a cliché, he presents the arrival of the Romans and the Normans as welcome cultural visits – like Victorian missionaries bringing beads and Bibles to the natives. In fact these events were bloody, brutal invasions, hotly but unsuccessfully resisted by the incumbent people, who in fact already had their own well developed societies.

He goes on to exemplify the benefits brought to us by the Huguenots and Jews without pointing out that the former made up only one per cent of the population of 18th century Great Britain, while the Jews still only number 300,000 of our population of 65 million.

Contrast this with the official figures for the largest so-called ethnic minorities – immigrants from Europe, those of Asian origin, African and West Indians, which make up almost 20 per cent of the UK population. And these are just the ones we know about.

This means nearly one fifth of our population is of foreign origin.
