In response to “Name and address supplied” (Letters, October 14). There were many inaccuracies.

Strike action is used as a last resort, but research has shown that a demoralised and demotivated workforce isn’t good for patients. Health workers who are properly rewarded have a higher morale, and more motivated and enthusiastic. It won’t take away from the fact they’ll still be working incredibly hard and be very tired, but it will more properly compensate them for that. Thus patients will have a better experience. Strike action isn’t meant to improve the reputation of the QEH or NHS, the hard work of all the staff involved, does that. It will influence the coalition because the depth of anger felt will show the government that NHS workers mean business. There are further days of action planned for November and December.

The reader claims that nurses are paid very well for their labours, higher on average than most people can earn in a job in the private sector. This is another inaccuracy. There are many many people paid very well in the private sector, in fact in the top FTSE 100 companies the wage of those at the top are 120 per cent more than that of the average worker. The Government has said that the economy is growing, but ordinary people are seeing no signs of this in their wage packets.
