Have your say

On August 25, Channel 4 carried a report from “Wisbek” – yes, presenter Matt Frei had problems with pronunciation.

He had probably never heard of “the Capital of the Fens” prior to this assignment.

Local “Leavers” were interviewed, one of whom growled angrily, “half of this lot fought for Hitler.” Setting aside his generational ignorance, he presumably remains unaware that the Second World War began when Nazi Germany invaded Poland, or of those Poles and Czechs who flew RAF spitfires in the Battle of Britain.

Edward Wheatley in one of his letters to the Lynn News wrote defending such people with the charge that “Remainers” consider themselves more “intelligent and morally right”. With the “Wisbek” examples, I rest my case.

Hopefully Edward will join me in condemning such ignorance. And, as far “as we won, you lost, shut up” is concerned, I reply with that oft-quoted phrase (Evelyn Beatrice Hall) “I disagree with everything you say but will defend to the death your right to say it”.
