There is a phrase that has come to my attention recently to describe Brexit based on the BBC drama Evelyn Waugh’s Decline and Fall and it is Flail and Decline.
Mr Tusk assured everyone that no punitive action would be taken against the UK, as Brexit itself was punitive enough. And this is beginning to roll out when the real purpose for Brexit is becoming evident.
Firstly, it is clear the UK government is not in control of the process, the 27 remaining countries of the EU are. On the UK’s side there is May, Hammond and Johnson as the main characters. There is someone called Davies, but he is not significant. The Observer likens them to the three ex-Top Gear presenters. But, bearing in mind the latest divisive budget in which “uniting the country” translates in real life to flogging the ordinary citizen in order to fill the boots of the elite, they are more akin to the Three Stooges. These are faced by 27 representatives from the other EU nations who have to answer to their parliaments and their voters. They are not going to allow the UK to trade with them in conditions more favourable than they have by being in the EU. In fact, there is some thought that certain member nations hope negotiations fail so the UK can be left “flailing and declining” as punishment for desertion. Not only is there talk of the UK having to stump up £50 billion in order to leave but also there may be an ongoing alimony payment. Tories and Ukip are responsible for opening this Pandora’s box.
Secondly, there is the realisation that the referendum was not a plebiscite but a concerted effort to undermine the little democracy that is left to this country. The anxiety over loss of sovereignty to the EU was hogwash compared to the assault on British citizens’ civil and employment rights. The people who funded Leave believe that citizens have no rights unless they agree to them. People like Arron Banks, Boris Johnson and Farage are just agents of sinister dark forces engineered by moguls of the corporate world and possibly Trump and Putin. Banks himself admits to despising politicians and he has poured money into Ukip and Leave EU. Through the use of data analysis of social media the Brexiteers can formulate their misinformation, lies and subversions of truth and target susceptible voters. How is it a person can vote for Leave when nobody knows what Leave means? A more sinister aspect of this is the abuse of anyone opposing Brexit. What I see Banks, Farage and Trump as a threat to is the sovereignty of each individual which is what to be a democratic socialist, a member of Downham Market and District Labour Party is in defence of.
