Even though I am an East Anglian Catholic of the Diocese of East Anglia which is in communion with the See of Rome,
I am frequently critical of the hierarchical framework imposed by the Vatican. However, I have to commend very highly that action and announcement of the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nicholls. He denounced any acts of violence and also denounced violent reprisals and any acts of hatred. He has planned to accompany four Imams for an audience with Pope Francis.
Whatever one’s faith or beliefs are, one has to see the truth of this. Where a person commits such a heinous act of cruelty and disregard for others’ humanity, the response should be to protect any community from which the perpetrator comes. The person who killed at Westminster does not provide an excuse to persecute anyone espousing Islam. It is a reason to acknowledge their grief at this misrepresentation of their faith. Vincent Nichols hit the nail on the head when he said that counter-violence breeds further violence.
I am sure all Catholics of St Dominic’s Parish in Downham send their condolences and intentions of prayer for those who are bereaved and those injured, and also wish all Muslims our respect and reassurance.
