Your very disgruntled ‘true blue’ ex card-carrying Conservative Party correspondent George Ward has come to the amazing conclusion that those with left wing leanings confuse the current Cameron-led Conservative government with true ‘Conservatism’ (Letters April 19, ‘Cameron is heir to Blair’).
On that score then Mr Ward presumably thinks that NW Norfolk’s current serving true blue Tory MP Sir Henry Bellingham is not a true Conservative? It’s quite understandable these days why the Tories pick on each other when their beloved neoliberal free market system is in crisis but for one Tory to claim that a right-wing multi millionaire Eton-educated Prime Minister like David Cameron is ‘heir to Tony Blair’ and not a true Tory is really quite bizarre.
Let me give Mr Ward a more likely equation to consider.
Far from the crop of millionaires who make up the current Tory government being heirs to New Labour and Blairism, New Labour and Blairism were always true Blue Tories themselves, especially when they were in government. What with the last Labour government’s commitment to PFI, tuition fees, privatisations and public spending programmes, all approved by the then Tory opposition, so true blue Tory was the last New Labour government that the Tories had to change leaders three times to appear different before they eventually got back to power again in 2010 on account of their own failed Tory policies by Labour.
