Liz Truss is right to admit that the agricultural sector is dependent on migrant labour. However, she should also point out that many employers in the East of England exploit migrant workers by paying shockingly low wages whilst profiting from the provision of rip-off accommodation.
We must tackle the cosy relationship between agricultural employers, gangmasters and agencies recruiting exclusively in Eastern European countries. We must legislate for minimum wages, thus creating a level playing field for all employees, whilst ensuring that everyone enjoys the essential protection of the same employment rights. And of course we should also recognise that agriculture is only one of a number of sectors dependent on, and exploiting, a migrant workforce.
