I POSTED a birthday card on Thursday to my son, who lives in Cambridge, but I couldn't remember his house number.
So I wrote the name of the street on the envelope together with an apology to the postman for the absence of the house number and the instruction that it was the last property in the road.

Unfortunately I couldn't tell him which end of the road because I don't know the names of the roads at either end where junctions are formed.

That makes me fairly useless, but supremely confident in the ability of the "Royal" Post Office to get my son's card delivered to him.

That's because our "Royal" Post Office is a magnificent British institution, the rightful envy of the civilised world and worth fighting for.

I blame meddling accountants – bean counters at the centre of every slashing cutback and chopping axe ever swung.

First the moneymen had to disarm this fine institution by amputating its royal prefix. Assasination of anything with royal heritage or patronage could not be sanctioned.

Now, bit by bit, they've worried the loose hem and tugged around the wayward edge of the tapestry until we've reached this ragged travesty – the end of the post office as we know it in this country.

It'll disolve before our very eyes if we let it.

Post office officials needs reminding that it is OUR post office, not theirs. We dropped our guard and what happened – Lynn's main post office, housed in a grand building as befits a grand British institution, was closed and moved to the back wall of a stationers.

Now is beyond the time to stand shoulder to shoulder and say NO MORE. STOP RIGHT THERE!

A consultation period has been launched. From past experience (Lynn's Baxters Plain fiasco) the paid servants of the post office need reminding of the definition of consultation: To discuss something with someone, especially in order to get their approval or permission – Oxford English Dictionary.

Remind them of this and use every facility at your disposal to be a part of that process. That includes the protest form at the foot of this page which I would urge you to fill in and send back today. You own the post office, not them. England expects every man (and woman) to do his/her duty... we shall not be (over) ruled by petty, coin-counting bureaucrats scrabbling at the ramparts of another bastion of Britishness.

I am indebted to Dylan Howell who emailed this picture under the subject heading "fire service cutbacks" saying: "At last!!!!! Definitive proof that the fire service intends to cut back on resources in the town."

Look again Mr Howell, notice how the bicycle bears an uncanny resemblance to a post office deliveryman's bike. That's the next money-saving wheeze – an amalgamation of services! Police and ambulance on a bike next.

Yes, it is April 1. Happy All Fools' Day to you, too.
