Former Lynn News Sportswoman of the Year Barbara Parker secured her steeplechase Olympic Games place in Beijing this summer by taking a silver medal at the National Championships in Birmingham at the weekend.
Former Pott Row athlete Parker (25, pictured in recent action on the right), who is now based at Florida State University in the United States, came inside the Olympic "A" qualifying mark with a time of 9:40.10 minutes to seal her spot in China.

She was outsprinted on the final lap by Helen Clitheroe (Preston), who took the UK record with a 9.36.98 win.

RECORD

In May, Parker had smashed Hatti Dean's original 3000m steeplechase record of 9:38.56 and set new personal best figures of 9:37.08 at an American Milers' Club meeting in Indianapolis.
