WEST NORFOLK AC: Blistering temperatures greeted the athletes for the Norfolk County Athletic Championships.
Shanice Burch (17 women) was the star for West Norfolk AC by magnificantly winning three gold medals in 100 metres (13.4), 200m, easily in 26.2, and long jump in 5 metres 14.
The day actually got off to a great start with probably the highest standard Under 11 Boys' long jump ever seen in Norfolk. The top four all jumped enormous distances for boys aged 9 and 10.
Thomas Middleton jumped a massive 3.96m, 60cm more than ever before for silver and James Greenhalgh finished 4th with a personal best of 3.77m, a distance that would have easily won gold last year.
Thomas got two more medals in the 80m sprint final (bronze in 12.4) and a fantastic and hard-earned silver in the 600m (1min 58) and James two further PBs for 5th in both the sprint final(12.7) and 600m (2min 06).
U11 girls: Jade Nicholson made the enormous step from sportshall athletics to track and field with some fine performances: 9th in the long jump 2m 99, 10th in the 600m (2m 23) and just missed a place in the final of the sprint (13.9 in the heats). Lucy Edwards smashed her PB in long jump (4th in 3.24m) and 80m sprint (6th in the final). Lucy performed well after near exhaustion in a hard fought 600m for 10th place (2.23m).
For the U13s Matthew Bailey won a great gold medal in the 75m hurdles (15.4). Matthew is at last sorting his stride pattern out. Shot putt: 2nd with a throw of 5m 81. His long jump was just after the fine hurdles win, 11th in 3m42.
Craig Brooks deserved better reward. His long jump of 3m 85 placed him 4th and he also finished 4th in a tight 100m final (14.4).
Craig's best performance came in the 200m (2nd in 28.1) where he was pipped for gold by the smallest margin. His fastest time of the day in the heat (28.0) was a national standard performance.
The real stars of the day were the Jim Moss group of longer distance runners who battled through tremendous heat.
Henry Loughlin easily won the 3000m for U15 boys in 10 mins 20 and Rebecca Daines likewise won the 3K for U17 women in 11.02. Jonny Laybourn won gold in the 5000m (16m 58) where obtaining a fast time was impossible and Ben Collison placed 2nd in the same event for senior men (19.05).
For the veterans Molly James broke her PB for 800m in a time of 2.29 for second and John Greenhalgh continued his recovery from injury with a steady 20.03 in the 5k for 3rd.
Lewis Ely (U20s) jumped 1m 90 (national standard) for 2nd in the high jump.
