THE centrepiece of the Stock Car and Banger fixture at the Norfolk Arena on May Day Bank Holiday Monday was the annual figure of eight event for the Bangers.
Even though the extra jeopardy of the crossroads in the middle of the track isn't every driver's idea of fun, an entry of more than 30 drivers was ahead of expectations.
They put on a cracking display of crashing for the large Bank Holiday crowd. The Bangers were more than ably supported by nearly 60 TSR Bangers and 25 1300cc Stock Cars.
Bangers: a smart new car on display for 312 Tom Reynolds (Lynn). A pile up happened at the centre intersection within seconds of the first heat beginning, between Andy Lack (Wisbech), Darren Fendley (Lynn), Barry Chilvers (Wisbech) and Reynolds.
Nathan Lake (Lynn) also suffered massive damage when he was picked up by another driver across the diagonal and buried straight on into the wall at the far end.
Final: Gavin Bond (Diss) was the winner. Destruction Derby: Wesley Starmer (Holbeach).
The TSR Bangers had their biggest field of 2008 so far. Michael Walls (Spalding) led the very rapid final until he was taken out by Lee Ellis (West Lynn) which handed a win to Sam Reynolds (Norwich).
Allcomers race: after a huge crash, Russell Gill (Lynn) emerged as the victor. An explosive destruction derby started out with a massive head-on between Gibson and Jason Shreeve (Fakenham). Richard Steele (Lincoln) was the last driver running.
The 1300 Stock Cars were rough and tough as usual. Some of the lower graded drivers got the chance to break away and Jamie Wyatt (Lynn) took his first stock car victory in the opening heat: Final: John Moat (Wisbech) took his first shale win.
Racing action returns to Lynn on the afternoon of Sunday, May 18.
- The sun finally shone on Swaffham Raceway on Sunday for the track's biggest crowd so far for the new campaign.
Potter Heigham's Anthony Amis won the final in the Thunder Rods class. He held off the challenges of Lynn's Danny Day.
Steve Usher (Fakenham) won a Mondeo Rods heat but had to settle for third in the final.
The national bangers made their first appearance of this season and their entry was fronted by a nine-car turnout from the Essex based Gladiators team.
