Golf: Reynolds looks to reverse fortunes
NATIONAL PRO-AM Championships. John Reynolds of Lynn Golf Club will tomorrow bid to erase the bitter memory of missing out on last year's PGA National Pro-Am Championship Grand Final.
Reynolds lost out on a shot at the title of Europe's biggest pro-am and an all expenses trip to Turkey on countback in the regional qualifier at Lynn.
But a year on and the PGA golf professional has another chance to reach this year's final as Lynn again plays host to more than 60 pairs from across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Essex.
The winning team will head to Turkey and the Sirene Beach and Hotel Resort and Antalya Golf Club.
Host pro Reynolds (52) will be joined by Brian Burchall (17 handicap) as he finally looks to reach the final having been a runner-up in the qualifier on four occasions – including last year.
"I take the positives out those results – given I've been so close," said Reynolds.
"People try and make out that we should do well as we have home advantage and while obviously we do, there's also a bit of extra pressure because we are at home.
"I'm looking forward to giving it another go and it would be nice to win, although I play very seldom as I've just taken on the role of general manager as well as being the professional."
Lynn's tight tree-lined track will certainly prove a test for the assembled field, with much resting on how the amateurs manage to steer their way through.
"Because there are two scores to consider one player can't win it on their own," added Reynolds.
"It has to be a team effort and the amateur has a big part to play, but it's a matter of how they cope with the pressure and deal with it out on the course, which is very tight but also in the best condition I've seen it in for this time of year."
Last year's winner Paul Wilby of Fynn Valley (Ipswich) is looking to emulate his success when he teams up with Tom Miller, who plays off 17.
Other clubs lining up at Lynn include Colchester, Ely City, Great Yarmouth & Caister, Thetford, Royal Cromer and March.
The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.
This year's grand final, played over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, has a professional prize fund of £30,000 and is being played from November 30 to December 4.
