THERE was another massive entry of cars at the Norfolk Arena with the inclement conditions failing to dampen the spirits of the near-100 number of bangers in action.
With 30 2L Stock Cars also in action and with the track in impeccable condition despite the earlier rain, a night of high-speed action packed racing wowed the crowd.
The main event was the annual Michael Bailey Memorial for Unlimited and 2L Bangers. Swaffham’s Davey Cox was the defending holder of the memorial shield in the Unlimited Class.
Making a successful defence was always going to be hard work from the back of the grid, but Davey did his very best and did well to get on the rostrum in third place.
Later in the meeting Davey was placed in both of the hectic All Comers races with two fourth place finishes before rounding off a good night by trashing the opposition to take the flag in the destruction derby.
Other local drivers in action in the Unlimited Bangers included Charlie Haller (Fakenham) and it was great to see Lester Freestone (Lynn) behind the wheel of an unlimited banger again.
Davey Cox had a busy night – as well as competing in the Unlimited Bangers he also raced in the 2L Banger class – other local drivers in the 2L class included Rob Aldridge, Tom Reynolds, Luke Allen, Ricky Twell, Anthony Bailey, Jay Chilton, Mark Cook and Darren Fendley.
It was an important day for Anthony Bailey and his family with them racing in memory of his late brother. Anthony turned out a super-smart car and delivered a fantastic performance in his brother’s memory.
In the heats, which preceded the final, Fendley did well to hold onto second spot behind Yarmouth’s Michael Allard, while Ricky Twell flew through for third in the closing stages.
No Lynn drivers were placed in the memorial final with Roy Gedge the first local driver in the places, coming home in seventh place.
Lee Sampson was the best local performer in the 2L Stock Cars with third in the meeting final.
Sampson recorded the fastest lap of any drivers in the race but winner Steve Newman (Spalding) and runner-up Ivan Street (Chatteris) were in good form all night and Sampson ran out of laps to catch them.
Lee’s brother Jamie was also placed in the final with a fine seventh place finish.
Lee’s final place followed a heat win in the second heat and he also placed third in the first heat.
Jamie Sampson and Fred Powell (both Lynn) were also placed in the heats.
Stock car and banger racing returns to the Norfolk Arena on Saturday, July 5 (6.30pm) when the action-packed 2L Bangers are back on track.
Racing also comes from the TSR Bangers and the 1300 Stock Cars.
