THE West Norfolk Sports Council's Sports Taster Roadshow takes place at Marham this weekend, offering activities ranging from football and tennis to wall climbing, fencing, judo and carpet bowls.
Marham roadshow co-ordinator Paul Nicholson said: "We have quite a few people already involved in village sport activities and we are delighted that they are representing us at the Inter Village Games at Lynnsport today (Sunday).

"These roadshow activities are to encourage those who aren't already involved in any sport to come and have a go or perhaps to try a new sport.

"Who knows, maybe somebody trying a sport for the first time at the roadshow will be representing us at the Inter Village Games next year."

Sports Council roadshow co-ordinator Paul Brandon said: "Past roadshows have proven to be very popular and have resulted in a number of people taking up a new sport and many villages have now started their own clubs and activities which is brilliant.

"Carpet bowls is a good example – the equipment fits into the smallest of village halls and bowlers do not need their own equipment so its inexpensive and accessible for all.

"The game can be enjoyed by anyone, young or old, and its very sociable and easy to learn."

Sports development manager Roger Partridge agreed that carpet bowls is one of the fastest-growing activities in the borough, saying: "We often loan out equipment to villages wishing to set up a club so that they can see whether it's going to work for them.

"The majority of villages that borrow equipment successfully set up a club and we are now seeing regular carpet bowls leagues at Downham Leisure Centre and Lynnsport and a variety of other competitions being set up between clubs."

Carpet bowls will be on offer at the Marham roadshow between 10am and midday tomorrow, with expert tuition being provided by the Wormegay/Tottenhill Carpet Bowls Club.

Geoff Sturgeon, chairman of the Sports Council, said: "The response we've had to the roadshows so far this year has been excellent and of course the weather we have had has encouraged many more families to come along and take part.

"We have ten roadshows planned for this year and six booked in for next year already. If any other villages are interested in hosting a roadshow next year, either on its own or as part of a village fete, we would love to hear from them."

The roadshows are part of the Borough Council's Let's Get Active campaign. For more information visit www.letsgetactive .org.uk or contact Geoff Sturgeon on 01553 671050.
