Racing: Quartet catch the eye at Fakenham
THE first four winners at Fakenham's penultimate meeting of the season really caught the eye – Tony McCoy, Richard Johnson, Timmy Murphy and Sam Thomas.
Between them this outstanding quartet have won just about all the major prizes to be had in National Hunt racing and there were plenty of punters on a sun-drenched afternoon at the track who looked no further when laying out their bets.
McCoy kicked off with his only ride of the day to take the Event Guard Stewarding and Security Selling Hurdle over two miles on Rapscallion.
Despite hot favouritism the champion jockey still had to work hard on his mount to overcome outsider Aleemdar, who led the field of 12 into the final half mile and looked the likely winner.
But coming up the home straight and with a great leap at the last, the favourite swept home to win by three lengths.
Johnson was another with just one ride to his name who also made it count.
His mount Apocalozzo was a convincing winner of the Open Air Concert 31st May Chase over two miles and five furlongs despite brushing through a couple of fences.
Kept up to his task all the way, he pulled ahead to win by a comfortable 12 lengths.
There was a close encounter between the two market leaders for the SIS Novices Hurdle over three miles.
Odds-on favourite Ofarel D'Airy, ridden by Sam Thomas, was taken on by Virginia Preuil under a determined ride from Timmy Murphy.
These two fought it out over the final mile but Murphy's horse just had that bit extra and was never headed.
There were no problems for Thomas in scorching home to take the Fakenham Racecourse 31st May Rock Concert Chase over three miles on the Paul Nichols-trained Ocean Du Moulin.
He looked a class apart and won by a distance.
Another odds-on shot made jumping look easy to win the Fakenham Fox Hunters Chase, again over three miles.
The impressive Kadount, ridden by Mr James Owen, strolled round in great style with only Snob Wells able to give forlorn chase.
The final race of the afternoon, the Rock at the Racecourse 31st May Mares Only Hurdle over two miles and four furlongs, went to favourite Pochard, given an excellent ride by Mark Bradburne.
In an open affair, Pochard emerged from the pack to open up a good lead and hold it to the line, winning by nine lengths from Double Mead.
The final meeting at Fakenham before the summer break is on Sunday, May 18 with the first race due off at 2.10pm.
