After the Lynn Stars ferociously beat the Mildenhall Tigers by 54 points last week, tomorrow they will defend themselves against a new pack of feline prowlers, in the shape of the Sheffield Tigers.
Sheffield and Lynn have an intense rivalry between each other and are determined t,o get the better of one another whenever they meet.

“Last year they knocked us out of the play-off semi- finals and that hurt” said Money Centre Stars team manager,
Rob Lyon.

“This will be a great opportunity to get our revenge and make sure we keep them down in the bottom half of the table while we earn ourselves another two points and move to second place.”

hit back

Tigers boss Neil Machin hit back: “Last year we learned a lot about Lynn, especially in the 75-15 defeat we suffered.

“We have started to make amends on that by knocking the Stars out of last season’s play-offs and we will approach this meeting with a view to winning it or at least keeping it close.

“So far this season we have under-achieved and it’s a perfect chance to get things right.”

The Tigers are still led by Ricky Ashworth and Andre Compton, while they have also retained Paul Cooper, ex-British Under 21 Champion Ben Wilson and Joel Parsons from last season.

Kyle Hughes and Ben Powell join them at reserve to form a team more than capable of posing a challenge to the Stars.

Tomorrow is the first of the Speedway Summer theme nights, with fans encouraged to come along in Wild West-themed fancy dress.

For those who don’t have the chance to get a costume in time there will be themed giveaways on entrance to the arena.

Stars team: 1. Kevin Doolan 10.12, 2. Shaun Tacey 6.76, 3. Tomas Topinka 9.05, 4. Simon Lambert 5.43, 5. Rusty Harrison 6.47, 6. John Oliver 4.71, 7. Kozza Smith 4.73.

Sheffield: 1 Ricky Ashworth 7.93, 2 Joel Parsons 5.85, 3 Andre Compton 8.88, 4 Paul Cooper 5.30, 5 Ben Wilson 7.12 , 6 Kyle Hughes 3.00, 7 Ben Powell (G) 5.04.

Co-promoter Jonathan Chapman said of Saturday’s narrow loss at Rye House (see page 63): “I was very encouraged by the meeting.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, we wanted a win on the night.

“But Somerset lost away and Edinburgh drew. If those results had been any different, we could’ve said goodbye to the title.

“We still stand of chance of winning the league.

“Really, I was encouraged and so chuffed to see our young riders give it a good go and doing so well.

“Rye House said it was the best meeting they’ve had all season.

future

“We’re always looking at a step ahead. On the night it was disappointing, but you could see a good future for us.

“You look at Kozza Smith, Simon Lambert and John Oliver, the future’s there. Plus you’ve got Kevin Doolan , who’s still 26 or 27 and riding so well.

“Even if we don’t win the league, I can guarantee we’ll score the most points out of everyone.”
