THIS weekend residents of Fincham and Wimbotsham will join the host of villages which have benefited from free sports taster sessions as the West Norfolk Sports Taster Roadshows pay a visit.
The roadshows, which are part of the borough-wide Let's Get Active campaign, enable people to try a wide variety of sports before making a commitment of time or money and provide an opportunity for people already involved in sports to form or extend clubs.
Visitors to Fincham, which hosts the roadshow today (Saturday) between 10am and 4pm, are in for double the treat as there will also be a fete to browse around whilst taking a break from all the sporting activity.
Geoff Sturgeon, sports council chairman, explained: "We hope that combining the events will make this a really enjoyable occasion for the whole community."
Tomorrow (Sunday's) stop at Wimbotsham will be just as action-packed. The day kicks off at 8am with karate and winds up at 5pm with a family game of rounders and a barbecue, as all that exercise is bound to give everyone an appetite!
Speaking of the weekend's line-up at both villages, Geoff Sturgeon said: "We've been really pleased by the response so far and we're confident that this weekend's events which includes tag-rugby, martial arts, aerobics and table tennis to name but a few, cater for all tastes.
"There will be a mobile skate ramp for young dare devils which will have fully trained instructors to give tuition which we think will appeal as it's fun and challenging."
Paul Brandon, sports roadshows co-ordinator explained: "One of the aims of the roadshows is to help support villages which want to set up clubs of their own so that locals can make activity a part of their lifestyle.
"We've found that carpet bowls has become very popular with a number of villages setting up clubs.
"It is great because it is a relatively inexpensive sport to play and when it is offered on your doorstep it's convenient, welcoming and travel costs are kept to a minimum."
With this aim in mind, the borough council of Lynn and West Norfolk has loaned Fincham village hall a set of carpet bowls equipment to trial the sport with a view to forming a village club.
Methwold High School is limbering up to host the next Sports Taster Roadshow on June 28.
